President Nasheed delivers hate speech in his first state radio address to the nation
In an address broadcast on the state radio Voice of Maldives at 7:15 today, Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed again accused the Maldives Police Services of unjustified delays in their investigations into Auditor General Maakun Naeem’s reports on corruption issues of the previous administration.
Last May, speaking to his ardent loyalists, President Nasheed had accused the police of deliberately delaying their investigations. In the following days, Police Commissioner Ahmed Faseeh undertook a series of illegal raids on opposition MP private offices and homes. The raids were made without required court warrants. The Judiciary had rejected police requests for such warrants on the grounds that police had insufficient evidence to justify their proposed searches.
In his radio address, President Nasheed also stated that he is categorically opposed to two bills submitted to the Parliament by members that would undermine his powers to appoint State Ministers, Deputy Ministers and other appointees to certain political posts.
One of the two bills President Nasheed referred to is the Bill submitted by Mohamed Nasheed (Independent MP for the Kulhudhufushi North Constituency) stating that the powers to appoint and remove the Police Commissioner should not be vested solely with the President. The proposed amendment is to require parliamentary approval for the appointment and removal of the Police Commissioner. The justification given by the MP for his proposed amendment is to ensure that the police remains a civilian force that is not subject to the political whims of the President. The current Police Commissioner Ahmed Faseeh is Nasheed’s political appointee, whose family is well connected to Nasheed’s Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
The other Bill opposed by President Nasheed is a bill submitted by Riyaz Rasheed (Qaumee Party MP for the Thaa Constutuency) stating that appointment of State Ministers & Deputy Ministers must be approved by the Parliament prior to their appointment. The justification given by MP Riyaz for this amendment is the rapid proliferation of State Ministers and Deputy Ministers in President Nasheed’s government. Yesterday, again President Nasheed appointed 2 State Ministers and a Deputy Minister. All of yesterday’s appointees were candidates from his Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) who had lost in the recent parliamentary elections.
President Nasheed in his address today attempted to justify his creation of a Presidential Commission (widely referred to as Nasheed’s Witch Hunt Commission) allegedly to investigate corruption of the previous regime. The Commission has been slammed by top legal experts in the country as unconstitutional, and with extra legal powers that infringe on the powers of constitutionally mandated independent commissions and offices. President Nasheed said today that his purpose was to assist the police and the constitutional independent commissions in their investigations related to the Auditor General’s reports.
Nasheed said his Commission would assist the country’s political parties in the identification and strengthening of their future leadership and would also act as a watch-dog over activities of his government’s officials. He did not elaborate on how the Commission was assisting political parties.
President Nasheed’s Witch Hunt Commission is led by his crony Ali Shiyam, son of key MDP financier Abdulla Ali. The Commission consists of MDP radicals publicly known for their virulent hate attacks on opposition leaders. The homosexual leader of the religious fundamentalist party Adhaalath Party Hussein Rasheed is also a member and Additional-Chairman of the Witch Hunt Commission. Hussain Rasheed has been vociferous in hate attacks against former president and opposition leader Gayoom.
The audit reports which President Nasheed has ordered the police to investigate are targeted at leading members of the opposition. Auditor General Maakun Naeem, President Nasheed’s close crony and a member of one of MDP’s leading families the Maakun Family, has been slammed by top legal and financial experts for rampant unprofessionalism in his audit practices and for corruption. The Anti Corruption Commission is presently investigating two cases of corruption against Auditor General Maakun Naeem. Concrete evidence has been presented of cases where Maakun Naeem used Audit Office funds for his private use, and Audit Office credit card for personal expenses.
President Nasheed’s radio address today continues his hate and persecution campaign against opposition leaders. He has publicly threatened that he would arrest opposition leaders in the upcoming days even if for a few minutes. However, the Judiciary has remained firm in refusing to issue warrants for the arrest of Nasheed’s targets such as Deputy Speaker of parliament Ahmed Nazim. MP Nazim is Deputy leader of the opposition People’s Alliance Party and MP for Meemu Dhiggaru constituency.
In contrast to the Judiciary, the Maldives Human Rights Commission has so far not taken any action to protect the individual human rights of the opposition leaders. The HRC has been requested by Opposition Leader Maumoon Abdul Gayoom for action to uphold his human rights in the face of his sustained persecution by President Nasheed, top political leaders in his government and his party MDP. Rights of individuals embodied in the Bill of Rights such as the right to non-discrimination, equality before the law, the right to privacy, right to protect reputation and name, right to fair administrative action, right to fair and transparent hearings, and freedom from unlawful arrest or detention are being violated ad nauseaum by President Nasheed. The HRC has so far been silent on the issue.

OmiGod! The man in the pic is the President of The Republic Of Maldives?
June 5, 2009 12:31 PM
yes president nasheed he is ... who said he is a man of honour anyway. he cannot move a step without ziyyaattey and everyone knows why. he is the 'joint' secretary!
June 5, 2009 12:57 PM
Sure, he is the presidet. In this pic he is keeping up to his name 'GANJABO'. Are the members of your commision blind folded, when they are looking at the activitities of your govt, Mr. President? If Naseed is faithful to the people, he should first clean his govt, before they look into the past. Why dont he ask his commision to investigate Adil Saleem, Husnu Soodhu, Mohamed Shihaab, tourism industry and so on. Is he giving them the chance to swindle citizen funds, by giving them higher posts. I am sure even if there is corruption , Maumoon or Yaamin or anyone else cant do anything now.First clean your shit before u clean somebody elses.
June 5, 2009 1:20 PM
Yes Mr. Haridasa. That rowdy in the photo is our President. And what you read in the article (if you did) is exactly what he said this morning and what he continue to do. Are we ashamed of this moron? Yes we are.
June 5, 2009 1:47 PM
The first person his Witch Hunt Commission should investigate is the Commission Boss Ali Shiyam's father Abdullah Ali or Ali Abdullah. The guy bribed court judges and tourism ministry people to get his resorts and has swindled many. The Witch Hunt Commission should also investigate Ali Shiyam, his brother Ahmed Hamza, brother Jihad and sister Shamoona, all guilty of illegally owning resorts and bribing government officials.

Nasheed's speech is excellent. Gayyoom's gang is frightened to death now. Yameen's 32 millond dollars is to be frozen. Your mother is proud of you.
June 5, 2009 2:26 PM
Ali Shiyam's father Abdulla Ali (3A) was employed as the shopkeeper by a businessman from Huvadhu by the name of AbdulHakeem. This AbdulHakeem was from a lineage of Katheeb's who owned family businesses including vessels (Odi) that travelled between India and Maldives at the time. In 1969 young Hakeem took his share of the business and migrated to Maradhu (Addu) and started a shop. He needed a shopkeeper and Hakeem's friend who helped establish his shop (Maradhoo Wajdhee - Mavota Shareef's dad) suggested Abdullah Ali. At the time Abdulla Ali was in the Wajdhee's employment. In the early 70's Hakeem decided to bring his business to Male'. He rented a shop on Chandhanee Magu and transferred his business along with his manager Abdullah Ali to Male' to look after the business. Hakeem helped his manager start a life in Male' and looked after each and every of Abdulla Ali's needs inluding daily subsistence and children's schooling. Hakeem also gave his manager a share of the business and started to send his manager to Singapore to buy goods for the shop. a year and a few months into business in Male', Hakeem and his manager (now partner) started to have differences in opinion. One day when Hakeem came to the shop he was told that the shop and all the goods in it belonged to Abdull Ali and Hakeem had no place in the shop. Hakeem was turned out by thugs employed by Ali Abdulla and his family. Since then Hakeem roamed the roads of Male' carrying papers and knocking on all the doors of justice claiming his right. Hakeem was never able to prove his claim (& Hakeem is not seen on the roads any more - believed dead). This is the begining of AAA Trading Company.

Dear Anonymous @ 2:16. But Anni isn't proud of the fact that his mother had sex with his uncle kerefa Ganee while his father was in prison for the attempted assasination of President Ibrahim Nasir.

ya but anni mother is proud of him eyyyyy kekekekeeeee

That rowdy in the photo stopped the decent leaders of our previous government from killing more and more Maldivians in jails by shooting into javvah, havayah, fazaayah and from torturing religious scholars, journalists and political opponents.
June 5, 2009 7:16 PM
I support the readers comments: if they want to prove they are impartial, President's Nasheed's Presidential Commission should also investigate how the AAA Company obtained all their 12 or 14 resorts. How else but by bribery and corruption?

Media announced the president was going to give "state of the nation address" this morning. All he talked about was about the commission and tried hard to justify his actions. Nothing was said about the Country's economic and social situation. Very dissapointed.
June 5, 2009 11:49 PM
Yeah, the rowdy in the pic has done a lot of things like dishonering his outh, and challenging the religous scholars by drinking, and smoking ganja. Police has arrested a mother in front of her childen and family, in the middle of the night. Is this the way he wants to rule this country? Isnt this torture? Or is he keeping his word and showing his evilness?
June 6, 2009 6:08 AM
This is the ruler the Maldivian people voted for. This raises the question of whether Maldivians are illiterate and ignorant? or was the vote rigged? if so, are the Maldivian people so apathetic that they sit and watch this man ruin their country? Or are they just cowards who dare not fight for their children's rights? because that's who will inherit the collapsed economy, poverty and starvation from dictator nasheed.
June 6, 2009 7:22 AM
Dear Anon @ 11:49
During the early 80's Maldivian Police has done worse. I hope you remember the time when women like Maimoona (Kerefa Naseem's wife), Nasreena (Kuva Mohamed Yusuf's wife), Waseema (Kerefa Naseem's sister - a very young girl at the time) were arrested and put into solitary confinement and interrogated in their cells. Can you imagine the pain they, their parents, husbands, children and family went through? No Maldivian Government haven't been much better than the other. Evilness is a Maldivian Government trademark. Now Nasheed's Government has endorsed themselves with the same stamp. As for the collapsed economy, it is the Country's balance sheet from the past 30 years that is carried forward just now. So let us stop making statements that can be taken as a comparision.
June 6, 2009 7:40 AM
Dear Anon @ 6:08.
Actually my above statement on the collapsed economy is my thoughts on your comment. I hope none of the readers will take my thoughts as challenges to yours. I appreciate the quality of articles in the Rajjenews blog and notice the caliber of some of their readers' in these forums. I too am very concerned about the status of our Country and am trying to contribute in my limited capacity.I cannot find a saner place than the Raajjenews blog Readers' forums just now. Congratulations Rajjenews.
June 6, 2009 8:34 AM
Nasheed is a puppet (a BOMBI MAKUNU) of very powerful businessmen. People like his father-in-law Ali Abdulla, Uncle-in-law Sikka Ahmed Maniku, The Koli Clan, The Champa Clan etc. This community is Nasheed's powerbase within the Country. Their lust for eonomic power is the foundation on whcih Nasheed stands. This community (the axis-of-evil) cannot establish their control until they have exterminated Mr. Maumonn Abdul Qayoom and his support base. They will pursue a policy of hate politics until they have completely annihilated what they see as the barrier between them and success. Just now it is people like Yaamin, Shahid, Thasmeen and Qayoom's family. At the same time, one must also ack the fact that public confidence in these people is not strong enough to create the required cadence outside the parliament. I think they must decide on an "option" to win public confidence and spearhead a movement inside and outside the parliament to save this Country from the clutches of the "axis-of-evil" before it's too late.
June 6, 2009 10:07 AM
Exactly! The AAA-Sikka-Koli-Champa Axis of Evil must be stopped now. These people will not stop until they control every resort, every business and every dollar coming into Maldives. The Nasheed government inherited more than US$250 million in the State Reserves; somehow they have managed to make it fall to just US$32 million in just 6 months! It would be palatable if at least all this money was spent on massive development projects but profligate spending on top-level posts & fancy titles, cars and overseas trips for their relatives and friends have been the hallmark of this administration. Parliament should bring these people to account before they ruin us all.
June 6, 2009 10:16 AM
Please stop this "konme gotheh heyo verikameh" (anything goes regime) before they make us the laughingstock of the world. Remember, the first thing he said upon being elected was that he would annex part of Australia for Lebensraum (living space)! Memories of his idol Adolf Hitler...
June 6, 2009 1:33 PM
Dear Anonynous @ 7.22, what is this balance sheet from 30 years that you are talking about? please do not undervalue the sanity of those of us who read Raajje News. The past 30 years showed us massive growth that enabled us to graduate from a Least Developed Country. Only 2 other countries in the world have managed to do that, and the Maldives did it in less time. Do u think this growth came naturally? No, its because the economic, monetary and fiscal policies of the Maumoon Government were prudent, far sighted and correct. The results prove that. The balance sheet was extremely healthy before Gasim Ibrahim took over. Gayoom, Arif Hilmy and Mohamed Jameel as Finance Ministers controlled budgets and took the right decisions for the country, even in the face of bad adversity. Our economic health in the last years of Gayoom's regime suffered due to the 2004 Asian Tsunami. Even then, it was healthy enough for us to bounce back in 2 years, by 2006. But this man made tsunami in the form of BM Ganjabo has managed to derail our economy in just 6 months. He has exhausted national reserves, and spend exorbitantly on his international and national trips. Did you think his majlis campaign all over the country was funded by MDP cash? No, it came from the over & billion deficit budget. In fact, it came from the money allocated for development projects. Nasheed's excuse was that this was part of the project, ie his trip to each island to tell them of the project. Outrageous but true. Just wask Ali hashim to show you his budget figures in detail and you'll see the truth in what I am saying.
June 6, 2009 3:28 PM
Qayoom's campaign trips in 2008 were also probably at the expense of development projects. The cost of his travel's at the expense of his party remains a debt to the transport Companies. His lavish lifestyle at Theemuge (as we saw later) was surely another burden on the Country's earnings. In my comment at 7:22 I had mentioned about arresting innocent woman by Qayooms regime. In your rebuttal @ 1:33 I see no mention of the issue. There is more that can be said here. But I will not, out of respect to Mr. Qayoom. I have a debt to him on behalf of this Country. However, my friends. Dont forget these are Politicians we are talking about and Qayoom surely isn't the angel or prophet some of us are trying to portray him as. We do agree that Qayoom has done much for the Country. Maldivians have to be grateful to him. I certainly salute him. And I am sure that the majority of Maldivians do not support the policies Nasheed is pusuing against Qayoom. Nevertheless, Qayoom had his share of failures. DRP being one of the worst. If your issue is Qayoom against Nasheed, then, Dear Anonymous @ 1:33, I choose Qayoom. As President? None of them.

June 6, 2009 4:23 PM
Dear Anonymous @ 3.28,
Just couldn't resist butting in into your debate with Anon @ 1.33: if Gayoom's Theemuge budget was lavish, why did President Nasheed in his Supplementary Budget request the Majlis that an ADDITIONAL MRf 6 million be allocated for Presidential Palace expenses? Don't forget, this is after ALL the Theemuge social assistance (which reportedly took around 75% of the total Theemuge budget)given to the needy in previous years was abruptly cancelled. So if he's not spending this on social assistance, just what is President Nasheed doing with all that money?
June 6, 2009 4:28 PM
Hey 3.28,
Did you really think that if MAG's campaign trips were made at State expense, our very own Auditor General wouldn't have blasted that in his Audit Reports? As we have seen, he only confined himself to saying in the Audit Report that IF that had been the case then it would be illegal. Obviously Mr Naeem found no evidence of that, so I rather think your assumption is without foundation.
June 6, 2009 6:28 PM
obviously most RN patrons have much to say on the subject. Personally I judge it wise to bow out of this forum before I say something I may regret later. Without doubt, MAG IS the maestro behind the development we see today. (I wish Nasheed would come to his senses and look around him). Some of these (in my humble opinion) MAG brought too fast for us to grasp. Thank you, Excellency (MAG) for all that you have been to us. Thank you commentators for a very interesting chat. And once again Raajjenews, thank you indeed, for this great environment. Please continue your work. May Allah bless us all!
June 6, 2009 7:42 PM
@ anonymous 4.23: is it really true, I mean about Anni asking for extra money for his palace? I know he immediately stopped all "theemuge ehee" once he became President but if as you say he's not satisfied with all that money but wants another 6 million ruffiya on top of that, then surely majlis ppl must surely ask him about what he is spending it on? It can't all go on Sul Shiraz, right?
June 6, 2009 8:32 PM
Do any of our izzaiytheri menbarun ever read this blog? They should. We sure didn't elect RN, but they are asking the questions the elected MPs should rightfully be asking... Come on Majlis menbarun, pluck up your courage and ask about how the presidential palace budget is being (mis)spent!!
June 7, 2009 3:14 AM
Dear Anonymous @ 3.28. What makes you think those women were innocent? Please check your facts closely. The Kerafa family stole millions from the government treasury. Have you seen the pics of how they lived in style in those years? The Kerafa family connived their way into top government by luring Hon. Ibrahim Nasir with their sister Naseema. They then used this bond to live it up in style with all expenses paid by the treasury. Kerafa Naseem stole millions from his brother in law Nasir himself from tourist resorts. Check your facts before lamenting the arrest of criminals and enemies of the state.
June 7, 2009 6:47 AM
President Nasheed did not sound presidential at all in his radio address. What came across were the excuses, the oh-you-would-understand-my-actions-if-you-knew-how-terrible-my-childhood-was justifications of a man who has gone too far and who knows the country has turned against him. He should have apologised for all his dictatorial actions since he took office, for the betrayal of the trust the people of this country placed in him when they voted for him.
June 7, 2009 11:49 AM
RN, please bring us a post on kosovo case. dr shaheed must know more than he appears to know. if anyone saw umar naseer on dhitv last night, they would know how irresponsible and corrupt shaheed is..
June 7, 2009 1:03 PM
yes, I saw it last night on thitv. We cannot let them get away like that. Umar Naseer is doing his job very bravely and each of us has to do , what ever we can do. And I hope majlis members are reading R N blog and take these issues to the floor. This blog is bringing us almost all important issues. Thank you R N team, you are doing a great job for the country. We are proud of you guys.
June 8, 2009 3:56 AM
Yes, RN, good job again. As Anonymous @ 11.49 said, please bring us mo info on the corruption and bribery related to the Kosovo independence case. Nasheed has tried to sweep this under the carpet, please don't let him do that.
June 8, 2009 5:40 AM
I saw Umar Naseer's interview on DhiTV too. It was very brave and courageous of Umar to stand up to Shaheed's bullying. Is it the same with all these short people? Is bullying the only way they can get any respect?
June 9, 2009 10:51 AM
Heh heh, well done Anni. Now Maldivians are seeing what corruption really is. Thank you for this great service to our nation. Now we know who is telling the truth. This gives the absolute lie to what MDP were saying ll along and this is what they were so afraid of.
